But the sign outside says “Leave me alone”

Jacquie laughed at his impersonation of the cartoon character and skipped down the hall next to him for a second before returning to just walking. She looked down at their feet blinked a few times in the silence Right, left, right, left, She thought to herself. Jacquie knew that her awkward and nervous personality was showing through more than usual. She opened her mouth to talk but nothing came out. Typical, she thought furrowing her brow slightly in frustration with herself.
She was glad to hear his voice again, almost not even hearing what he said. She was great? She laughed softly as he continued to stutter through the sentence biting her lip. She was still looking down for a second before she looked back up at him smiling, “You’re great too, and you look great. I like your shirt, won’t lie I only know like two Nirvana songs but they’re good so I assume the rest is good.” She said with a nod biting the corner of her bottom lip. “Um, so where are we headed?”
Teddy smiled over at her, glad that she didn’t embarrass him even more over what he had said. “Thank you.” He said more confidently with the slight tilt of his head. When she mentioned his shirt, he had to look down to remember what he was wearing. “Oh, yeah! They’re really great. Awesome for getting rid of teenage angst.” He chuckled at what he said last then looked over at her. “Well I got us a table at Blue Orchid. It sounded fancy enough to me!” He raised an eyebrow as he laughed. “I was trying to pick the best place and, on the ship, that was it.”
Teddy led Jacquie up some winding stairs then, finally, they were at the place’s entrance. “Here we are.” He grinned over at her then talked to a lady for a moment who then led them to their table. It was next to a window that overlooked Miami’s shoreline. It had gotten darker and the stars were just starting to come out. “Nice view.” He said with an impressed look.
She turned back around after setting the card down next to the bears. “I could see you being the crazy dad.” She laughed softly and nodded. “yeah let’s get going.” She said laughing softly at his raised eyebrows. “ooo fancy, sounds exciting” She put her bag back on her shoulder and walked back towards the door with a bounce in her step. She just got really happy around Teddy. He made her nervous and it made her got nuts.
There was almost something rebellious about the fact she was going out with him, at least on her side of the date. If her dad saw his tattoos he would flip. Jacquie’s parent’s didn’t pay much attention to her unless she was doing something wrong. She didn’t want to think that was the only reason she was going out with Teddy. Actually, she knew that wasn’t, he wasn’t anything like what she had previously thought boys with tattoos were like. He wasn’t an ass and she didn’t think that he was going to murder her. He was sweet and funny and he made her smile and feel different, like nothing else around her was going to hurt her and that was really a big thing. She had always been paranoid, that is what sparked the panic attacks.. She shook her head slightly scolding herself for having such close minded thoughts. She opened her door and held it open for him until they were both in the hall. “Lead the way I guess,” She said smiling at him.
Teddy laughed at what she said as they made their way into the hall. “Smashing!” He said in his best Nigel Thornberry voice. He nodded and began walking with her, an awkward silence filling the air for the first minute or so. Even though he was usually upbeat and rather crazy with other people Jacquie proved to make him feel different. More mellow, more balanced. His mom had always complained that he was going to drive her to exhaustion when he was a child; A child who was almost always bouncing off the walls. All of his friends and even strangers had gotten to the fact that he was just this guy that was happy, intrigued, and satisfied with life. Maybe a bit more than he should’ve been.
Finally, Teddy broke the silence between the two of them. “You’re great.” He cringed at what he said. “Well I mean you look great tonight which I guess means you’re great but.. Uh yeah.” Teddy looked to his feet as he walked, hoping he didn’t sound like as much of a loser as he felt at that moment. “I think I’ll just stop now.” He smiled over at her with a nervous laugh.
